Back in 2012, I was working at a boutique design studio in Singapore’s Central Business District. We’d inherited a client — a luxury property developer — whose website looked like someone had poured every possible design trend onto a single page. Flashy banners, cluttered navigation, walls of text, three different color schemes competing for attention.
The client wanted to know why their site wasn’t converting. And that’s when it hit me. They weren’t failing because the design was ugly. They were failing because no one could actually find anything. The visitor’s eye didn’t know where to look.
So we did something radical. We removed. We removed half the navigation items. We cut the homepage copy by 60%. We went from a chaotic color palette to neutral grays with a single teal accent. We treated whitespace as an active design element, not wasted real estate.
